Tuning
Tuning is the process of changing the pitch of the piano by turning the tuning pins. A piano goes out of tune primarily due to the seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. These changes cause the wood soundboard and bridges to expand and contract changing the tension of the strings. If the instrument is used a great deal, the amount of playing can also affect the tuning.
Manufacturers recommend a new piano be tuned 3-4 times the first year and twice a year after that. This is especially important if someone is taking lessons. Students will enjoy playing the piano much more if the instrument sounds good (and doesn’t sound radically different from their teacher’s!). If the piano is only used occasionally and is stable from many years of regular service, once a year may suffice. If the piano has not been tuned for many years, a pitch raise or pitch correction may be needed to bring it up to standard pitch, A440 (the A above middle C beating at 440 beats per second). This will take longer and cost more than a routine tuning and will require a follow up service within 3-4 months.
