Voicing

According to the Piano Technician’s Guild Technical Bulletin, voicing is the “… process of modifying a piano’s tone…”.

If the voicing or tone of the instrument is not even or downright unpleasant, the tuning may not be satisfactory.  Piano tone can range from very bright and loud to very mellow and soft with everything in between.  The sound that is right for your piano depends on the type of music you are playing, the acoustics of the room and the abilities of the musician.

A piano should be able to play different tones from loud to soft and be even from note to note.  Pianos come from the factory with a particular sound and tone which is the same over the piano’s range.  If your piano sounds different from what it sounded like new, due to natural wear from use, or if you’ve never been quite happy with the tone, voicing may help you to enjoy the instrument more fully.  This is a procedure that is done in the home and is most effective if the person who plays the piano is available for their opinion during the process.
